What do you want from your job?

July 21, 2015

I can say with a fair degree of certainty that no one wakes up in the morning and says, “I’m excited about heading off to my thankless, low-paying, dangerous job.” More than likely, you share common aspirations for your career, regardless of the label you and your generation have been given (boomer, generation Z, millennial, etc.) based on the year of your birth.

View the “What do they want from their first job” section of this Adecco infographic and see if Nina Zipkin could be talking about you and your job. Keep this in mind when interacting with co-workers, employees, and clients.

Don’t let “work” become the opposite of “play”

March 3, 2015

I am fortunate to be able to play with words for a living. However, too many people associate work with drudgery and the absence of play. In doing so, they are missing opportunities to be
• Celebratory
• Creative
• Curious
• Engaged
• Fun-loving while solving problems
• Hands-on
• Happy
• Helpful to more people
• Humorous
• Memorable
• True team players
–all aspects of play that should be part of the workplace.

Have fun at work and play more.
• Engage your creative, fun-loving brain as often as you can
• Play games instead of surfing the Internet during breaks
• Look for the humor in situations
• Create your own celebrations and work holidays to inspire your co-workers to share in the merriment

Where do you find up-to-date technology news?

February 17, 2015

Technology changes so fast that it helps to have some go-to sources for technology tips, tools, and reliable information. Blogs like Adventures with Technology and Mashable  are ongoing resources for me, and here is Larry Alton’s list of must-read tech sites.

Apps for the new tablet user

January 20, 2015

In my affluent corner of the world, people seem to spend more and more time on their devices and less and less time talking to each other so I was surprised to hear someone ask “what’s an app?” This post is for that new tablet user and anyone else with a pristine device, just waiting for some cool tools. Check out
• Kim Komando’s list of 10 essential apps for your tablet
• Reviews and free downloads in the iTunes store
• AppAdvice’s AppsGoneFree, an app available in the iTunes store, that showcases apps that are free for that day only

Congratulations!

December 30, 2014

Take time right now to congratulate yourself and your team for your accomplishments. It’s too easy to get caught up in year-end reviews, budget meetings, and long-term planning and simply forget to celebrate what makes you great!
• Being honest
• Choosing to work to make a difference in other people’s lives
• Giving back, paying it forward, volunteering, or mentoring
• Staying positive, even displaying a sense of humor, when faced with tough circumstances
• Being grateful
• Offering exceptional customer service

Remember birthdays and special occasions

November 25, 2014

Stand out! Don’t just send holiday cards. Send a card to remember birthdays and another for any special occasion. Add a handwritten note and you will be memorable because you will be one of so few people who take the time to do this.
