When you are real

February 3, 2015

I have long disagreed with an often-quoted line, from Margery Williams’ book The Velveteen Rabbit, which states “When you are real you don’t mind being hurt.” Feeling hurt, on behalf of yourself or others, is human and can be an integral part of recognizing and addressing injustice.

With the advent of reality TV and social media, people have more opportunities than ever to be real and many of the results are not pretty. Scott Greenfield, on the other hand, provides an excellent example of being real both in sharing what he does (see the right side bar) and in communicating honestly about hurt (the January 29 post).

Go ahead. Admit something hurts and show others you are real.
