Lose the labels

July 7, 2015

Look at the person next to you (at work, on your commute, in your community, where you do business, at school, on the news, etc.) as a human being not as a
• Prospective source of revenue
• Millennial, baby boomer, or member of generation X, the lost generation, or the silent generation
• Good or bad parent
• Bright or bratty child
• Pacifist or patriot
• Democrat or Republican
• Left-wing or right-wing
• Prospective religious convert or zealot
• Body defined by gender, skin color, nationality, socio-economic status, job title, IQ, or zip code
Lose the labels and treat others as you would like to be treated.

Is a smartphone controlling your life?

May 26, 2015

Thanks to smartphones, we can have instant access to more information than we need at any waking moment. We can also
• Miss out on the simply joys unfolding around us but capture the milestones in pictures
• Forget how to carry on a face-to-face conversation but text quickly
• Tune others out yet tweet trending news
• Both lose sleep and sleep better thanks to smartphone technology
• Imagine selfies are more awesome than sunrises and sunsets or other people laughing but share pictures more easily
• Blame poor spelling and grammar on typing on a tiny keyboard and/or texting in a hurry so we post fearlessly and often

Smartphone technology can also save lives, time, energy, and money. These cartoons disregard those applications. With that in mind, check and see if you identify with any of these scenarios where a smartphone could be controlling your life.

The gift of conversation

April 28, 2015

In a world where many are inundated with information, overwhelmed with opportunities on social media, and are either tuned in to or turned off by technology, you can stand out. Engage in meaningful conversations.
• Show an interest in the other person
• Ask thoughtful questions
• Listen
• Respond without interrupting
• Keep the conversation going with open-ended questions or observations

You don’t have to be an expert to show you care. The greatest conversationalists I know spend more time listening then they do talking, yet they say so much by their presence and their attention.

Who needs your gift of conversation today?

Business social media

April 21, 2015

As a content marketer and copy writer, I’m often asked about creating content “for all the social networks.” Although that would be a substantial amount of content (and income for me), my response is always “focus on where your ideal clients spend time and then create the most valuable content that you can—for them. Depending on your brand, this may be
• Breaking news or appropriate responses to breaking news
• Contests
• Directions, how-to information, tutorials
• Fun facts
• Humor
• Ideas for DIY projects
• On-location pictures and commentary
• Photos of new products along with how people are using them
• Progress reports
• Special offers for friends, fans, and followers
• Ways for your audience to share their story as it relates to your business or organization
• Last but not least: take an interest in people—engage in real conversations,  ask questions, or share something of theirs you found interesting instead of just churning out content of your own
