As a wordsmith, I am fascinated by the words people—including plagiarists—choose to use. For example, plagiarists
• Borrow ideas—and use the word “borrow” to legitimize their stealing from someone else
• Share concepts—and use the word “share” to justify copying and pasting copyrighted material to their blog, Web site, or other online presence without getting permission from or giving credit to the original author
• Practice blog scraping—and use the term “blog scraping” to avoid acknowledging their plagiarism
If only plagiarists were wordsmiths. They wouldn’t need to steal other people’s writings and ideas, and they wouldn’t need to redefine perfectly good words to cover up activity that is wrong, illegal, and dishonest.
