Ghostwriters aren’t real writers?

I conducted a one-question survey asking, “What do you think of when you see or hear the word ghostwriter?” Checked responses included:
• Anonymous help for someone who hates to write
• Anyone who co-writes without receiving credit
• Article writer without a true byline
• Author
• Drafter of speeches and other political campaign material
• Someone who creates technical or medical papers to be endorsed (but not written by) known experts in the field
• Writer
What surprised me most about the results was how few people thought of ghostwriters as writers. Personally, I think of ghostwriters as exceptional writers because they have to write well in someone else’s voice.
