Do you talk about your customers?

Unless you always shop online, you’ve probably encountered a salesperson talking on the phone or to another employee, loudly complaining about a previous customer while you wait to make a purchase. I don’t know about you, but this makes me want to drop the merchandise and run. Even if you work in a florist shop on Valentine’s Day (or some other business setting you believe is more chaotic and stressful), remember what your mother always said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Even better, let your customers catch you saying something wonderful about others. Recommend someone in your circle of friends, neighbors, vendors, Chamber of Commerce members, or social networking followers. Mention clever ways clients have used your product or service. Refer tradespeople who have done a great job for you. Leave a good review online. Say thanks on Twitter. Make a LinkedIn recommendation. You’ll find that some people will follow your example, giving you a good reason to talk nicely about your customers.
